ABF Recital# 15: Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme (Awake, the Voice commands) BWV 645 – Study Stats

Posted in ABF Recital by elwynrees on August 16, 2009

I’ve been tracking all tasks and time spent studying this Bach-Busoni piece.

 Here’s a brief summary.

  • Total time (so far):  66.1 hours
  • Total number of study tasks:   696
  • Number of days on which practiced:  69

One noticeable trend was that the numbers of tasks seemed to gradually increase during the study period. You can see that in the following graph.  The red line is where there was a several week break in work on this piece…

There seems to be a phase at the beginning, a  lag-phase if you like, where I spend time just figuring out how to approach it.

A pivot in Excel of the study tasks and  time spent on each of the study tasks reveals the following:

Summary of the total time (minutes) spent on each of the study tasks

The bottom line 61% of study time was spent on the hard bars and phrases.  In spite of this, the hardest three phrases remain so (and in later stages had tasks created specifically for them).

With the benefit of hindsight, the three hard phrases should have had focussed effort on them up front.  I also would like to “get into” the piece much quicker.   So an intense intial session may pay dividends later on.

Now its time to decide on the next piece!
