Comment:
Today was my first practice session for a while due to firstly being busy at work, but then at the start of last weekend I woke up suffering with severe back pain, which has kept me from Work, Piano and everyting else for athe last week. The pain has taken a while to subside and today whilst still sore, I felt it time to give it ago.

I think though, that whilst I may have lost nearly 10 days, sometimes a break can do you good. Today’s sessions on the latest Bach/Busoni Ich ruf, Zu… chorale piece went OK, it seemed very unfamiliar at the start, but I felt by the end that I was at least back where I was (possibly better even) and at the end of the session I felt I was making some headway. As bars become, not so much “fluent” but less terrible than they were, it takes discipline to keep the tempo right down. You can see from the detailed log, that I’m still focussing on the hardest phrases and bars, but soon it will be time to tackle the hardest section (which ever that is!). I still need to complete fingering details for much of this piece before moving onto phase two (section by section work).

I’ve been watching Hugh Sung’s tutorials on Clare de Lune and he has a lot of very useful practice techniques and strategies, particularly in lesson 23 where he’s attacking the first “Harder” phrase of the piece. I’m learning lots from Hugh’s efforts and will certainly like to learn this piece at some point, but the techniques are generally applicable and well worth studying, in particular I note that it seems very easy to cut and paste music loaded into the MusicReader software he uses into other Windows applications to create a ‘Practice Journal’ for the piece (a great idea). I have done something very similar in the past using PDFs and Adobe, but found I had to take a full screen shot then trim this in MS Paint, in Hugh’s software you simply draw a rectange on the score of what you need and cut and paste… simples!
