Comment:
The three current pieces (Solfeggietto and two Chorale Preludes) have today been put to bed for a few weeks. Solfeggietto will be back in two weeks and the other two in 4 weeks or so.

So now its time to start work on a ‘new’ piece!

It’s that old Warhorse Rachmaninoff’s Prelude in Csharp minor.

Now funnily enough, when I first came back to piano 3 years or so ago, this was the first piece I tried 😦 After a few months or so I got around 95% of it done. My personal stumbling block was the “4-staves” section at the end. I could not seem to acquire any fluency with the big chords. However, I found that the Agitato section was much easier than I anticipated. This was greatly helped by some excellent advice from Jazzyprof over on the ABF forum. So it’s finally time to have a second go at it.

I’ve come up with a study plan and notional times to get through each. I broke the 4-staves section up into 9 tasks and I’m going to deal with this section first, then the Agitato and finally the introductory Lento section (kind of back to front and hardest to easiest).

What was interesting was the time it took to get through the first task (less than two bars). I’d guessed at 3 minutes, it was probably an hour. If you look at the detailed log of tasks, it looks like I played several tasks, nope, I just didn’t stop the practice program from running, so it is all the first task. I probably spent too long on it, however, its memorised and playable. This is a similar time it took to memorise the sections of the previous piece.

This single task has been very useful, I’m going to set all these tasks to 30 minutes initailly for the first day, then reduce them to 5 on the second. The primary goal is memorisation at a very slow place. So there will be a wave of focus on memorisation straight away that will move through the piece. I’m not to keen on spending 9days memorising just the 4-staves section, so hopefully, I’ll start doing several chunks at once soon.

It was fun going back and forth between the chords, practicing the changes. I also started making further notes on the score about the fingering.

The plan for the next few weeks to to focus on just the Rach (+technical exercises) then during the third week the 1-2-4-Memory rule will kick in and I’ll start to drop it from regular practice for a few days at which point, other pieces will rotate back for review.
