Comment:
Completed book 2 of the Dorothy Bradley sight-reading series. I’m still enjoying these. Lunchtime today I went down to the library and picked up volumes 2 and 3 (grade 1 &2) of the Peter Lawson series. I started working on the first of these this pm. I decided to complete these two before continuing with the next (book3) in the Bradley series. Whilst in the library, I enjoyed looking through the scores in the music section and came back with some grade 1 & 2 stuff for further sight-reading practice.

I’m now on cycle 16 of my tour around the circle of fifths in all major and minors. The metronome is at 104. I play 1click per note to start off with over just 1 octave (even on scales I know well). Then work up to 2 octaves and 2 notes per click (208 notes per minute). I find this almost meditative. Each time I complete a cycle (roughly weekly) I’m going to rank up the metronome 4 or so clicks.

The second phrase has been tricky in the Vika (VKGOESWILD) version of Personal Jesus (Depeche mode). But this seems to be clicking, particularly the LH. I’m keeping the tempo down, but it seems to be geling nicely. The next on the target is the repeat of the second phrase/chorus which is not exactly the same as the first. This will be the target for this coming week. Re-learning this from her score correctly has been a swine having learnt it partially/incompletely by ear (well the RH was mostly OK).

Not sure what to do next though. Having spent a lot of time on "PJ" its tempting to do another by Vika (I have some other scores) as the major challenge has been the rhythmic elements which are similar in these pieces. But I’m also tempted by a Scriabin prelued (Op 67 No 1 I think). Quite a change.

Bottom line: Must prioritise sight-reading for a while, get up to sight-reading pieces and using Dianne Hardy’s 3-tier approach. Put-off decision on the "next challenging piece" for a few weeks.
