Picked a new ‘challenging’ piece today…. for here on in referred to as "NINH".

Apart from this just studies and scales and studies and scales…

Total practice time for 24/04/2011 : 100 minutes

Level 1,2 & 3…. no work at all. These are the sight-reading and pieces one and two grades above (today this seemed to be a chore).

Scales: continuing on another cycle around the circle of fifths, this time with the metronome up to 63 (which incidentally is minimum speed for Grade 5 of 8 in ABRSM).

Studies: The Hanon Ex 1 and Left and Right hand studies were also at slightly increased metronome values. These were feeling good today.

At times, as much fun as the sight reading and the easier pieces are, I get a yearning for something a bit more challenging. Anyhow, I got some scores this week. I started work on this one yesterday by reading through the score and dividing it up into sections. I played through it and it went the best of all the more "challenging" pieces I’ve studied in the last few years. Hopefully, this is due to "significant advances in technique and sight-reading due to my studious efforts", or alternatively its simply the easiest/challenging piece. I prepared a study sheet of the four hardest bar (well those that seemed that way on first play through). I cycled through these several times, then tried the main sections of the piece. I spent a lot longer then playing through the sections (which is listed in the study tasks below). It felt like it was coming together and also that the sight-reading is most definitely helping!!!

Departing from the score: In a several places I simplified the score (there some harmonies to the melody that have to be played gently but I’ll get to these in due course), but in other places, I found myself padding out and trying to fill out the sound a bit.

But boy, was this fun!!!
