Working on a new piece….

The section I focused on last week is now just playable at half tempo. But it’s now down to just a couple of 15 minute study slots. During this time I start at a playable tempo, then increase it step-wise until I stumble. The phrase that I stumble in I then drop the tempo and play just it increasing the tempo, until it’s faster than when the mistake occurred. Then I carry on with the whole section, until I make the next mistake and repeat the process in whatever phrase it occurred. At the end of the study slot, I play it through slowly at the original tempo. Finally, I increased the base tempo for this study task ready for tomorrow (by 4). For the moment, this tactic will suffice whilst I get to grips with this piece. But it’s going to require a hec of a lot of work to get it up to tempo (if I even can).

I started work a couple of days ago on the "easy" first section, well it is if you memorise it, but it’s full of jumps all over the keyboard which makes reading it tricky, still this is some light relief from the harder sections.

Today I started work on this week’s main, target the next hard section (section 6). This has 4 or so main phrases and so each one of these got a 15 minute study slot today. The tempo was incredibly slow (40 and that’s for 1/16th notes).

Finally I read through a couple of the other sections and started noting the rhythm and so forth ready for next week…

Went through all three phrases/runs of secton 4 of the new piece. Starting at a very very slow tempo. Then worked on the first phrase and got it going much better. I’m still using the metronome starting at 40 (for 1/16th notes), but got the first phrase playable at tempo >130. It now feels comfortably playable at 120 (which was impossible at the start of the week). However, the target is much, much faster….

The first phrase in section 4 of the latest piece was geatly improved today. I again started at metronome = 40 with 1 click per 1/16th note, then increased it step-wise to 100+. This phrase was much more solid today, but it needs a lot more time at a slower tempo. I had a first pass through the remaining three phrases in this section. There’s some tricky jumps up and down the keyboard. The trick is really to take it ridiculously slowly the other tip is to only increase the tempo when you can repeat the phrase at least 5 times without error.

To aid focusing on just this section, I prepared a set of study notes from the original score, cutting and pasting each section in an MSWord document with page breaks between sections. I copy from the PDF into Paint and crop the bits I need there. So when I’m studying this section, I’m not tempted to play any other easier parts of the piece. I also went through the score looking for the tricky rhythmic bits, where there’s dotted eighth notes amongst sixteenths all meshed up between the left and right hands. On the trickiest bar in the current section I marked out the 1/16th note units before hitting a key.

Time to start a new piece! I spent lunchtime today going through the score. I divided it into eight sections and ranked them by apparent (at the moment) difficulty. So the first section is largely a fast 1/16 note run with octaves in the left hand and chords, single notes in the right. I decided to work on 1 section a week. If I can’t get the first section going this week then it’s too difficult and I’ll drop the piece for the moment. On the other hand if I can get it going at a slow tempo, then we’ll see how it goes. First thing, I only intended doing 15 minutes work on it, but it took a lot more and I only covered half the section!! I started with the metronome at 40 and managed to increase it to nearly 100 (at 1 click per 1/16 note).
