The Hanon exercises were interesting today. I increased the tempo from 76 to 78 (just 2 points), this has to be set as a "custom" value in Pianoteq (which I use daily with my Yamaha CP33). Normally I use the standards steps in metronome values it offers in a drop down list and so 76 would normally go up to 80 (the steps vary from 3 for low values to 4 in this zone then 6 at higher values). I’ve been struggling increasing the tempo on these and thought I’d try a smaller amount. I was surprised at what a big difference it made! I probably should have tweaked it up by just one! I also did the same for the exercise where I play all Hanon 1 to 10 sequentially. I’ve concluded that when practicing "at the limit" with the metronome, that the default steps offered (72,76, 80 etc) are too great and so will probably use the custom setting more.

Lately I’d introduced triplets (3 notes per click) when doing scales. These have been a revelation, in that they are very comfortable for me to play (at the indicated metronome values). So I’ve decided for the scales that I may ease off all the tempos and have a period of consolidation and perhaps focus on other skills, but use smaller changes in metronome values from now on. Currently, the metronome value is 88 and is proving “unreliable” for sixteenths.

I started a new weekly piece today, I just turned over the page in the Grade 3 set and took a look at the next one. I recognised it as one I’ve studied before on the last study cycle when it was a "Level 3 (5-6 weeks) piece. It was very very faltering at first! But it quickly came back to where it was before. At the end of the day, I felt the weaker phrases were better! It must be six months since I last played it through and a lot longer since it was studied.

This was a bit of an eye opener, recycling this piece previously studied in depth (level 3) in the level2 (1 week) slot, will (theoretically) produce a number of pieces that should be ideal candidates for peformance and recording. Well, we’ll see. But this current piece feels much more solid than the previous two weekly pieces. It seems that this approach could be a major plus of this Level 1, 2 & 3 system!

Went to the gym first thing, then found that the scales and hano felt smooth and fluid. This seems to be a regular thing…. interesting!

Haven’t done much with the Bartok piece this week, so gave it several sessions today. Used a metronome to set the pace of this rhythmic piece and increased from 100 to 200. Everything else seemed to go well too!

Practice today was really enjoyable. I went to the gym first thing this morning and it seems to be a consistent pattern that Hanon, scales and the other exercises always are more fluent and controlled if done immediately after a session in the gym and particularly if I’ve done a fair number of arm exercises…
